Type A gear pumps are compact assemblies consisting of a cast iron casing containing a set of rotating gears, and two connection ports. When the drive shaft is driven, the pump draws in liquid from one port and impels it from the other, with the resulting pressure and flow rates directly proportional to the applied power and speed respectively.

Type A pumps can be operated in both directions, although it is recommended to use them in the direction in which the gland nut is tightened. This type of pump is manufactured as standard with right-hand thread and in many cases also with left-hand thread for use with cardan shaft drive. If the pump is required to work in both directions, it can be manufactured with locknut or stud nut on request.
